Real wood floors offer the capability of being re-sanded and re-stained. Over time, wood floor stain gets worn down and begins to chip and peel. This is normal and will gradually happen a little bit more each year. Solid hardwood floors are different than engineered wood floors or vinyl because they can be stripped down to the bare wood and have new stain and polyurethane applied to make them like new again.
Average cost to Refinish Hardwood Floors
The average cost to refinsh hardwood floors such as red oak, white oak, pine, or brazillian cherry is approx $5-$6 per sq ft. This price includes sanding down all the floors to the bare wood, applying stain + sealer, and applying the top coat of finish protection. Extra considerations that can affect the average cost to refinish hardwood floors include stairs, complexity, stain color choice, and moving furniture/appliances.
